Families are invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Jefferson public library.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years and provide their children essential early literacy skills.
Each time parents or caregivers read 100 books, they will receive a reading incentive. When they reach 1,000 books, their name will be placed on the “1,000 Books Wall of Fame”. This free program is co-sponsored by the Jefferson public library and Partnerships 4 Families.
Reading to a child is one of the most powerful ways to boost his or her brain power. The simple and enjoyable act of sharing books helps a child learn pre-reading skills such as understanding the sounds letters make, developing a bigger vocabulary, and building background knowledge—all important skills that help prepare him or her for learning to read and entering kindergarten.
Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is free and available to all families with children between the ages of birth and 5 years. Registration is open. For more information, call the Jefferson public library at 515-386-4415.
